On Tuesday, March 7th, 15 people were killed and over 100 injured in a tragic explosion in Dhaka's Gulistan area. The incident occurred around 4:45 pm near the BRTC bus counter, and fire officials were quick to respond to the scene. As of now, the cause of the explosion remains unknown, and authorities are investigating the matter.
The explosion impacted a five-story building that housed a sanitary shop on the ground floor and a Brac Bank office on the remaining floors, as well as a nearby seven-story sanitary market building. Despite the impact, none of the buildings collapsed, which is a relief amidst such a devastating incident.
The injured were quickly taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where they were treated in the emergency unit. Sadly, Brigadier General Md Nazmul Haque, the Director of the hospital, confirmed that 14 of the injured in the explosion had succumbed to their injuries after being taken to the hospital. The death toll is likely to increase as several people are still feared trapped in the basement of the building, according to The Dhaka Tribune newspaper.
The local authorities are working tirelessly to rescue any remaining individuals who might be trapped, and eleven firefighting units are still working at the scene to carry out a rescue operation. It is a devastating time for the families and loved ones of the deceased, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this challenging time.
